Want the Garden of Your Dreams? Check Out These 29 Enchanting Pergola Ideas (2024)

“To sit in the shade on a fine day, and look upon verdure, is the most perfect refreshment,” Fanny Price observes in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. Even if your idea of “perfect refreshment” is an ice-cold margarita (salt? Why, yes!), there’s no denying the appeal of sitting beneath a canopy of green and feeling the cool relief from a scorching summer’s day. If you’re looking for a place that’s at once made in the shade and primed for some summertime imbibing, consider adding a pergola to your backyard space.

What is a pergola, you ask? In the traditional sense, a pergola is an open pavilion or tunnel-like structure meant to provide a framework for climbing plants. The word pergola or pergolata is Italian, according to the Oxford Companion to Gardens, and the concept can be traced back to Roman times—perhaps earlier. “In their simplest form, pergolas can be simply a structure from which to provide dappled shade and to grow vines,” landscape architect Geoffrey Valentino, a partner at the firm Hollander Design Landscape Architects, tells us. “They can also be more complex and offer a lot more amenities to further blur the lines between inside and out.” A pergola, and the greenery that engulfs it, can be a verdant frame for a garden path or a leafy roof to an outdoor dining patio.

“There’s a romantic sense of privacy and a delightful contrast of cool shade to hot fun within a vine-covered pergola,” adds Bunny Williams, the ELLE DECOR A-List Titan and author of a new gardening book Bunny Williams: Life in the Garden. “Because they are typically located over walkways, pergolas are similar to interior hallways. They are meant to lead somewhere, though they become rooms when they’re furnished.”

To install one, you can buy a kit of parts via your local Home Depot or even Amazon, but if you aren’t handy, it’s a job best left to the professionals. Depending on your local climate, you can let viny plants like wisteria, clematis, or even grapes take over your pergola. “Look for vines that grow quickly and spread well and can take to pruning,” Valentino advises. “Stay away from things that are too aggressive–they’ll be hard to control.” Williams, for her part, covers the one in her Connecticut garden in bright pink William Bafford roses.

Ready to perfect your own pergola? We’ve got you covered—literally. Below, we’ve rounded up the best pergola ideas—from the homes of Ina Garten, Reese Witherspoon, and others—to inspire your home garden makeover this summer.

”One thing that’s important to remember with gardens is to always have things that are tall,” Williams adds. “We are typically looking down, but to feel the space and to really connect you to the sky, I love height.”
