We love thick, creamy smoothies as a healthy replacement for ice creams. Using frozen fruits gives the smoothie a great texture like this frozen watermelon smoothie and cherry smoothie.

Why you’ll love this berry smoothie

All natural healthy ingredients – A nice thick chilled mixed berry smoothie is healthier than ice cream! You can whip these up in no time and you got a healthy replacement for ice cream cravings.

Easy to customize – feel free to use any berries that are available to you. You may also use the choice of yogurt or replace Greek yogurt with milk, either whole cream diary milk or almond milk.

Amazingly thick smoothie – you’ll love how thick the berry smoothie is.When making smoothies frozen fruits work BEST. The texture of a good smoothie is thick and creamy and you easily achieve it using all frozen fruits. As an additional tip, freeze pineapple juice, it’ll help with the texture.

Great make-ahead breakfast that can be served as a snack too.

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need –

All the ingredient’s exact measurements are mentioned in the recipe card below!

Ingredients notes

  1. Frozen berries – use berries of your choice. You can use any berries to make a mixed-berry smoothie. I love the combination of frozen strawberries, frozen raspberries, and frozen blueberries. ALWAYS use frozen fruits/berries. Using fresh berries in this recipe will give you berry juice and not a smoothie.
  2. Banana – peel and slice ripe banana and freeze it in a freezer zip lock bag for 2-3 hours. I recommend using frozen bananas for a thick smoothie (almost resembling ice cream). You may use room-temperature bananas.
  3. Vanilla Greek yogurt – adds creaminess to the smoothie. I love the flavored vanilla Greek yogurt, feel free to substitute flavored vanilla Greek yogurt with plain Greek yogurt whole milk or almond milk.
  4. Honey – optional, add it for sweetness in the smoothie.
  5. Pineapple juice – the liquid component that helps blend all the frozen fruits. I prefer to use fresh homemade pineapple juice.

Ingredients additions and substitutions

This berry smoothie can be packed with more nutrients by adding other fruits, green leafy vegetables, and seeds.

  • Additional fruits – Use sliced apples, mango, and avocados.
  • Greens – such as baby spinach, or kale.
  • Seeds – such as chia seeds, hemp hearts, and flax seeds.
  • You can add protein powder to make it protein-rich.
  • You may also include frozen blackberries, and frozen cherries.
  • Honey can be substituted with maple syrup or sugar.
  • You may also use other fruit juices such as orange juice, or apple juice.
  • Get creative – Adding an extra kick of flavor to the smoothie makes it interesting. A pinch of cinnamon powder, or nutmeg powder can be added.

Best blender to use

You want to use a powerful blender that has the power to blend frozen fruit. Powerful blenders like Vitamix, Ninja blender, or Nutri Bullet blender are perfect for making a smoothie.

If you don’t have the above-mentioned blender, use the blender you have and run it until the smoothie is smooth and creamy.

Useful tips

  1. ALWAYS use frozen berries.
  2. A mixed berry smoothie tastes best served chilled. Leaving it to rest at room temperature will begin to make the smoothie watery.
  3. Do not add ice, it’ll make the smoothie watery.
  4. For a thicker smoothie freeze pineapple juice before adding it to the blender.
  5. Feel free to add protein powder to make it protein-rich.

Variations

To make your own variation of mixed berry smoothie you can try adding different ingredients, such as –

  1. Additional fruits – Use sliced apples, mango, and avocados.
  2. Greens – such as baby spinach, or kale.
  3. Seeds – such as chia seeds, hemp hearts, and flax seeds.
  4. You can add protein powder to make it protein-rich.
  5. You may also include frozen blackberries, and frozen cherries.
  6. Honey can be substituted with maple syrup or sugar.
  7. You may also use other fruit juices such as orange juice, or apple juice.
  8. Get creative – Adding an extra kick of flavor to the smoothie makes it interesting. A pinch of cinnamon powder, or nutmeg powder can be added.

Storage instructions

Any leftover smoothie can be stored in the refrigerator for a few hours but consumed the same day. If you plan to store longer, you can freeze the smoothie. Transfer the smoothie to mason jars, seal the jars tightly, and freeze. It can be stored in the freezer for a month.

Recipe FAQs

Can you use fresh berries instead of frozen berries?

ALWAYS use frozen berries. Using fresh berries in this recipe will give you berry juice consistency, it won’t be thick and creamy.

Can you add ice to the berry smoothie?

No, I don’t recommend adding ice. Ice will make the smoothie watery. I would recommend using frozen berries as a replacement for ice.

Can you substitute Greek yogurt with milk?

Though milk can be used as a substitute for Greek yogurt, I don’t recommend it. The smoothie will be thinner in consistency. Use Greek yogurt for thick smoothie.
